Sony has thrown its hat into the video portal ring with the purchase of Grouper.com.Although the company already sells TV shows and movies online through various sites, including Guba.com, this acquisition means that Sony can mix its copyrighted content with user-generated videos.
No immediate changes will be made to the Grouper.com site, but in time Sony plans to add advertising and premium-content videos.
Grouper, like most video sites, lets users post their favourite videos to social networking sites like MySpace and Friendster.com.
Unlike other video portals, Grouper features a P2P sharing network that lets users who download the software to share their own videos with other members, and allows transfers to portable media devices. Biz, Mergers, Sony BMG, Grouper, Cameras
