CES 2012: Still thin, just not the thinnest

Acer Timeline Ultra

While the main focus of the Acer press conference at CES 2012 was the thinnest laptop in the world that is the Acer Aspire S5, it shouldn't go without note that the Taiwanese computer maker came up with two other perfectly good Ultrabooks at the same time.

Sure the 14- and 15-inch Acer Timeline Ultras might not have magic flaps at the back but they still feature an impressive sounding 8 hours of battery life, an Intel Core processor, dedicated graphics for intensive 3D gaming and even a slim DVD-Super Multi optical drive. Now that's something you won't find on the S5.

At 20mm thick at the thickest, the Timeline Ultras are only 5mm off their superior sibling and they're still as much a pleasure to have in your hands and at your finger tips. This time, the gentle curves have given way to more sheer, boxy looks that give this line an appearance closer to the Lenovo U300 Ultrabook, and that's no bad thing.

Like the S5, you still get that isolated keyboard and one piece touchpad combo as well as the Dolby Home Theatre technology and USB 3.0 and HDMI ports. Beyond that, you have to start paying for the optional extras with both SSD and HDD available and a choice of Intel Core processor. Fortunately, there is another nice feature that is standard to these machines which is the company's Instant On and Always Connect tech that lets users manage their multimedia and data on all their devices at anytime, anywhere - even from sleep which, in theory, it should take just 2 seconds to arouse from.
