Jonathan Ive, head of design at Apple and the man responsible for the look and feel of the company's most revered products, including the iPad, iPod and iPhone, has been awarded a knighthood in the British Queen's New Year Honours List.

The award was in recognition of Jonathan Ive's services to design and enterprise.

"I am keenly aware that I benefit from a wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making," he said after learning of the accolade.

"To be recognised with this honour is absolutely thrilling and I am both humbled and sincerely grateful."

The knighthood is the second time Ive has been recognised in the Honours List. In 2005, he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE).

"I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design," Ive added.

"I feel enormously fortunate that I continue to be able to design and make products with a truly remarkable group of people here at Apple."

Jonathan Ive becomes Sir Jonathan Ive.
