We now know so much more about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

The latest in the long-running first-person shooter franchise will be available this fall and thanks to an all-encompassing Community Reveal Event in May, we know what game modes to expect.

The only sad part is that we have also had confirmation that there will be no single-player campaign this year. There will be solo play, but with co-op bots as your virtual friends.

So, without further ado, this is what we know about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 so far.

Release date

Activision revealed Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's release date relatively early doors. It will be available globally from 12 October 2018.

There will also be Private Beta before launch, which will be open to those who pre-order the game. We don't currently have the Private Beta dates, but they will be different for each platform.

We hope to find out more at E3 2018 mid-June, and we should see further footage of the game modes. Thanks to Activision's partnership with PlayStation, it is likely it will be a major game featured during the Sony E3 press conference, to be held on Monday 11 June.

Formats

It has been confirmed to Pocket-lint that it will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC - with 4K versions for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. The PC version will be sold and hosted through Blizzard's BattleNet.

Contrary to popular rumours, it will not be released on Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay and theme

There are some that thought that Treyarch's Black Ops games stepped too far into the realms of science fiction with the last two outings - not quite as far as Infinite Warfare, but with a heavy slant on verticality through boost packs and wall running mechanics.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 reverts the series back a step or two. It is a "boots on the ground" game, meaning that there will be no super-powered leaps into the air, or farting around on rooftops.

From what we know so far, the main mode is Multiplayer, with heavily customisable weaponry and superfast action. Multiple characters will be available to play as, each with their own unique abilities.

We will reveal more when we have had a chance to go hands-on with the game soon.

Sadly, while a narrative will run through the Multiplayer missions, there will be no single-player campaign this year. It is thought that developement time was switched to the new Blackout Battle Royale mode instead...

Blackout Battle Royale mode

Industry analyst, Martin Olson from Piper Jaffray, suggested in March that, no matter the theme, Treyarch and Activision will adopt a Battle Royale style multiplayer mode for this year's Call of Duty. And he was right.

The gameplay style made most famous recently by PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite, where players must fight to be the last person standing, will appear as Blackout.

We're yet to see it in action, but are promised that it will be hosted on a vast map - the largest in Call of Duty history and playable characters will be drawn throughout the franchise's different chapters.

We'll bring you more on this when we know.

Zombies

As is usual these days, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 also gets a Zombies mode. This time, four characters are available to play in up to four-player co-op.

There are new Zombie threats and three different locations to play across, including on board the Titanic.

It looks and feels very different to the main Black Ops 4 experience and is very much a game in itself.
