The BBC iPlayer has finally crossed the Atlantic and can now be accessed on our North American cousins' iPads using the International BBC iPlayer iPad.

Unfortunatley for our Stateside readers, we're referring to Canada here - and not the US of A.

The global version of the BBC iPlayer landed, via a dedicated iPad app, back in July. It has an extensive back catalogue of the Beeb's TV gold such as Fawlty Towers, Only Fools and Horses and Doctor Who as well as plans for content from non-BBC shows from ITV and Channel 4, with shows sorted by genre rather than channel.

The 11 launch countries were Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland and now Canada has entered the party.

Jana Bennett, BBC Worldwide president of Worldwide Networks and Global iPlayer said: "We're proud to be building on the successful launch of this App by introducing it to Canada. It will open up the opportunity for a whole new audience to enjoy the best moments from 70 years of brilliant BBC programmes, wherever and whenever they want."

No word on a US launch date as of yet, but we're hearing that it will be soon. It's certainly a lot closer - geographically, at least.
