Motorola has admitted in its latest quarterly earnings report that it sold just 100,000 XOOM tablets in the last 90 days telling us that yet another company is struggling to keep up with Apple and its popular iPad.

“The company shipped a total of 11.6 million mobile devices, including 4.8 million smartphones and approximately 100,000 Motorola XOOM tablets. In the third quarter of 2010, the company shipped 9.1 million mobile devices, including 3.8 million smartphones,” the company said in a statement.

To put that into perspective Apple’s latest earnings reports stated that it sold 122,000 iPad 2s a day and over 17 million iPhones in the same timeframe.

As for the Google buyout? Motorola states that all is going to plan with the transaction is expected to close by the end of 2011 or early 2012.

Motorola has been rumoured to be working on the Xoom 2, which the company presumably hopes will sell considerably better.
