Samsung is keen to stress just how well its latest flagship is doing - releasing a statement boasting of 10 million global sales of the Samsung Galaxy S II, making it the fastest selling handset in the company's history.

Add that figure to the 20 million sales of the original Galaxy S smartphone and you've got a whopping 30 million global sales of the Sammy flagships. And that with the S II only just hitting US shops.

"Since its launch only five months ago, Galaxy S II has seen tremendous sales success and garnered enthusiastic reviews from consumers and mobile industry watchers across the globe," said JK Shin, president and head of Samsung's mobile communications business.

"This is in addition to the continued sales momentum behind Galaxy S, which we launched at CTIA 2010 as continues to be a run-away success with consumers."

But iPhone killer it is not. At least not yet. In the same time period (since the Galaxy S hit in June 2010) Apple has shipped between 85 and 100 million smartphones, depending on whose figures you go by, and that doesn't necessarily include the 4 million iPhone 4S sales in its first weekend.

So whilst Samsung has every right to be proud of its Galaxy S range, it is still playing big time catch up to the boys from Infinite Loop.
