If you thought the most fun that’s likely to come out of New Zealand at the moment is the sight of the southern hemisphere teams being given a run for their money in the Rugby World Cup, then let us introduce you to www.doggelganger.co.nz.

Upload a celebrity photo, or use your webcam to take one of yourself if you like, and the clever facial recognition software will show you which dog the picture looks most like.

Hours of fun to be had, but with a serious message too.

The site is hoping to encourage more people to adopt abandoned pets, a big problem the world over, as the economic situation starts to bite and families are finding they can’t afford to keep their cats and dogs any more.

Yes, this is a site based Down Under, but it’s a problem all over, so spare a thought for our four-legged friends and take one in if you can.
