Canon has unveiled the PowerShot SX40 HS, blurring the lines between DSLR and compact cameras.

The shooter features the Digic 5 imaging processor found in Canon's other compact models as well as a back-illuminated 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor. 

Digic 5 means decent ISO response, natural colours and multi area white balance as well as all the other usual treats found in Canon's DSLR models. Full HD 1080p movie is also possible thanks to the powerful image processor.

The camera body itself features a super long range 35x ultra wide angle lens. This means no lens changes and the focal flexibility of what would normally require three different pieces of glass on a DSLR. You are essentially going from 24mm all the way to 840mm on a single lens. The lens, however, doesn't have a constant aperture, starting at F2.7 and going up to 5.8 at the long range of the zoom.

A dedicated movie button keeps things switching nicely between still and video on the camera. There is also the inclusion of full manual control and on screen hints and tips. 

The camera is set for launch this October priced in at £459. We have got to say, however, that whilst it might not be for everyone, paying the extra pennies and picking up one of Canon's entry level DSLRs might be a better idea, you get the same camera but with the flexibility of interchangeable lenses.
