London's BT Tower to become giant lightsaber for Star Wars Blu-ray launch

14 September 2011 15:23 GMT / By Rik Henderson

Although they came out on Monday in the UK, the Blu-ray versions of Star Wars: The Complete Saga and the individual trilogy box sets are due for release in the US on Friday; so Fox Home Entertainment has been holding events all week, culminating in a star-studded party on Thursday night (15 September) in London with celebrity fans and original cast members rubbing shoulders.

The party will be held at the top of the BT Tower, situated in the heart of London's West End, and at 8pm, Anthony Daniels, C3PO himself, will be switching on a one-day-only "blue ray of light" at the top of the tourist attraction that will turn it into the world's largest lightsaber.

Daniels has also been signing copies of the Blu-ray box set and meeting fans at HMV in the newly opened Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, and we met up with him at Empire's Big Screen festival last month where he had some choice words to say about 3D.

Pocket-lint will bring you photos of the Star Wars launch party later this week.

UPDATE: It happened as promised. And while we work up the images we took, here is a picture of the BT Tower as a lightsaber that hasn't been Photoshopped by Rik Henderson.

UPDATE 2: We've returned with our own pictures of the BT Tower lightsaber. And we must say that, while not the same as the mock-up, it was much more impressive than we expected. Check them out here.
