Traffic light celebrates 80 years ruling our roads

Happy birthday

3 August 2006 6:02 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Today is the 80th anniversary of the bane of most drivers lives - the traffic light.

80 years ago today the first traffic light became operational in London, but what has happened during this timeframe and what can we expect the streets of London to look like 80 years from now?

To mark the event, BT, which currently manages around 40,000 traffic lights in London has outlined its predictions for the next 80 years.

Some are a tad crazy - like time travel and faster than light travel in just 40 years, but BT expects that our speed and steering with be automatically controlled by 2015, in just 9 years time with fully automated-piloted cars by 2020.

Stuff of dreams or reality, either way you heard it here first. And just to make sure, come back to the site in 2020 and let us tell you we told you so.
