The Skype video conferencing iPad app, which has just gone live, has now been pulled; according to the company this was down to the fact it "went live prematurely".

The company stated that: "To ensure your best Skype experience, we’ve temporarily removed Skype for iPad which went live prematurely today. We know you’ve been eagerly awaiting Skype for iPad and apologize for the inconvenience."

It's clear that Skype would want to get things just right as the app is a direct rival to Apple's native FaceTime, handling everything from phone calls, video chat and instant messaging.

All Things Digital have contacted Skype, and were greeted with a perfunctory reply saying that the "app will be re-released in short order".

Skype or FaceTime? Which one will you opt for?
