Sky signs up 90,000 to its HD service

HD gains more fans

Sky is making inroads in signing people up for HD service, and has announced that it has 90,000 orders as of 30 June, 2006.

However, less than half of these, 38,000 have been filled, although Sky expects to have all 90,000 completed by September.

Due to a sharp increase in demand for all things high definition, analysts GfK have raised the 2006 sales forecasts for HD-ready TV sets from 1.4 million to 2.73 million, nearly doubling their initial estimates.

Many viewers had signed up for the HD service after its launch on 22 May because of the promise of World Cup excitement, but the installation was delayed in the run up to the tournament due to problems, it claims, in the supply chain of HD boxes.
