Android Market updated, adds movies and books for US users

Google has introduced a new look to its Android Market, hoping to allow easier browsing and navigation through the hundreds of thousands of Android apps available, as well as, offering “new ways to find great applications and games, purchase books, and rent movies.”

Available for Android 2.2 and above, and rolling out to phones around the world over the next couple of weeks, the biggest surprise, apart from it looking like Windows Phone 7, is the launch of a US-only movie rental service that will offer Android users a service akin to Apple’s iTunes and HTC’s Watch offerings.

“With the Videos app, available in Android Market, there’s no more waiting for downloads, syncing, or worrying about storage space. Simply sign into Android Market with your Google account, and you can rent movies from anywhere - the web, or your Android phone or tablet - and start watching instantly. You can also download movies to your device so they’re available for viewing when you don’t have an internet connection,” said Google.

Not content with giving you movies, American Android users will also now be able to purchase books from Android Market on their phone. Google it appears, has had enough of Kindle and Kobo.

“Like movie rentals, books are linked to your Google account, so they’re instantly available across all of your devices - computer, phone, or tablet - without the need for wires or downloads.”

To get the new look Android market you don’t need to do anything as the update will automatically appear. Once you get the new look market it's just a case of downloading the new video app to get movies on the go.

No word on when Google will bring the video and books service to the UK.
