Samsung Galaxy 10.1: On sale 4 August

24 June 2011 10:10 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

UK fandroids will be able to get their hands on one of the hottest pieces of Android kit - the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 - on 4 August.

The official release date has been confirmed by Samsung, although as yet no price details have been revealed.

Over in the States, where the super-skinny Honeycomb tab has been on sale since 17 June, the device is priced up at $499 for the 16GB and $599 for the 32GB version.

If you've been living on a remote island for the last few months and have missed all the next-gen Galaxy Tab news then allow us to fill you in.

First up Samsung detailed the 10.1 at Mobile World Congress alongside Vodafone, which was set for a US release in March and a European release in April. However Apple came along and announced the iPad 2 a week or so later, causing the Samsung board to panic because the 10.1 now looked a bit fat in comparison.

So, at CTIA in March, Samsung showed off the new tablet which took on and beat the iPad 2's 8.8mm waistline. The original 10.1 that was demoed at the Barcelona expo measured in at 10.9mm thick, the slimmer model just 8.6mm.

Pocket-lint originally reported that Samsung had killed the fatter version at CTIA in Florida, however at the time both Samsung and Vodafone contacted us to say that wasn't the case.

It seems we were right all along though with the 10.1V as it came to be called, now firmly on the scrap-pile.

There's still no date for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, although Sammy tells us it will be available later this year.
