Whoa, welcome to the revolution Auntie Beeb!
That's right, the BBC has jumped on board the 3D express and confirmed that it will be showing the Wimbledon tennis Championship live in 3D.
And the good news is that, as long as you've got a 3D TV, you'll be able to tune in. You don't need Virgin Media or Sky (although the 3D action will be available on both) as the action will be shown on both Freesat and Freeview via the BBC HD channel.
George Entwistle, director of BBC Vision said: “We know how much audiences already enjoy the BBC’s Wimbledon television coverage. This is a hugely important experiment for us and I’m pleased that we have the opportunity to show some of our stunning sports coverage to our audiences, in 3D, for free.”
Last month Sony, who has been given the job of filming the world famous tennis championship in 3D for 2011, let slip to Pocket-lint that the Beeb could be about to use the stereoscopic format for the women’s and men’s finals this year.
“It’s technically possible for the BBC to do a 3D broadcast over their HD channel,” Malcom Robinson, Sony’s Live Production boss told us.
Looks like Robinson knew his stuff then. Wimbledon 2011 kicks off on 20 June. The 3D action will also be shown in some cinemas across the UK and the BBC is offering a small number of 3D screenings which will be free to members of the public via www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/.
