Girl flees own party when 1500 Germans turn up from Facebook

The curse of the Facebook-party returns, this time in Germany where a Hamburg resident identified only as Thessa, was forced to flee her own birthday when more than 1,500 guests and 100 police turned up.

After forgetting to correctly set her privacy settings on Facebook, Thessa saw more than 15,000 people confirming attendance to her party. Thankfully not all made an appearance at her Hamburg home, the party did grow large enough, however, to warrant the use of police horses for crowd control.

Whilst all this was going on Thessa had escaped to her grandparents house, where she spent her birthday in relative quiet.

Her parents had attempted to pre-empt the party chaos by informing police of the privacy related error and even hiring security to protect their house. But even public announcements in Hamburg where not enough to dissuade the potential party-goers.

Those who did turn up remained relatively well behaved, with the police only facing two small fires and eleven people needing to be temporarily detained. One officer was injured and several girls wearing flip-flops cut their feet on broken glass from the party. Hamburg Police spokesman Mirko Streiber said "nonetheless the party was a hit".

Things had clearly gone viral, with many at the party holding signs which read "where is Thessa," and some even bringing her cake.

"It was sheer insanity but mostly peaceful" said Streiber.

This isn't the first time that a Facebook-based party has backfired; 2010 saw 14-year old Rebecca Javeleau cancelling her own birthday party after a whopping 21,000 people signed up on the social networking site.
