WEBSITE OF THE DAY - Urban Wine Company

Urban growth that will pop your cork

31 May 2011 7:30 GMT / By Ian Hughes

The production of good wine takes years of experience, a lot of time, days of uninterrupted sunshine, a particular type of soil and a particular type of terrain. Doesn’t it?

Well, actually no, it doesn’t.

These enterprising Londoners have grown wine grapes in the big smoke, and with the release of Chateaux Tooting, their very own fine wine, they’ve proved that you can do it just about anywhere.

City gardens, patios, even window boxes have been taken over for the higher purpose of growing the grapes to making the wine, and at www.urbanwineco.com, they share their techniques for producing a fine vintage on a small scale.

At the heart of the project is the idea that communities can be brought together to produce good things, and that’s something that seems to have gone out of fashion these past few years.

We wish them well. Cheers.
