WEBSITE OF THE DAY - Urbex

Take a look at the world around you - from forbidden viewpoints

4 May 2011 1:00 GMT / By Ian Hughes

As you make your way through your day-to-day life, how much attention do you pay to your surroundings? We're not suggesting that you all blunder around bumping into things all the time, but seriously, when was the last time you had a really good look at the world around you? It's something we should all do, because the world around us is changing. Fast.

Urban explorers are people who do take the time and they specialise in exploring the parts of our landscape that have been neglected, closed off or forgotten. Old hospitals, wartime bunkers, secret installations, disused factories - you name it, if you're not supposed to explore it, these guys will want to.

It's a bit of a legal grey area, in that these guys have a motto, which is "take only photos, leave only footprints". It’s a nice idea, but most landowners don't embrace the same ethos, more's the pity.

You might have read about four blokes arrested under the anti-terror laws in London recently. They were trying to find lost Tube stations, by wandering through the Underground tunnels after hours. Not advisable and clearly not good for your long-term liberty.

But the idea of taking what might often be one last look at some of our most notable architectural views is definitely appealing. We’ll make do with the website here at www.simoncornwell.com/urbex though.
