Sony has killed the PSP Go after less than two years on sale. It's the first casualty as the company makes way for the the next generation of its handheld console range; the Sony NGP, due out later this year.
According to Japanese website AV Watch, Sony has confirmed that the PSP Go will no longer be manufactured or shipped “in order to concentrate on the NGP".
When asked about the PSP-3000, Sony told AV Watch, "It will continue to be sold, and we will keep focusing our attention on it from here on out."
For many, the move is a logical one. After poor sales, and the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play - which borrows heavily from the design of the Go - it was natural for the company to wind it down.
Add to that the news that the NGP will be making its debut in the very near future (in Japan, at least), and you have to ask who is likely to buy a device knowing that it will be replaced so quickly?
The PSP Go will, of course, still be on sale until stocks have been depleted, so there's still the chance to catch a slice of gaming history before it becomes a favourite at car boot sales up and down the UK.
Amazon.co.uk currently has stock selling for £142.99. Although, we expect that as the NGP launch date nears, this price to drop considerably.
