HTC has tried to make sense of which handsets past, present and future, will be getting the new HTC Sense 3.0 update first seen in March on the EVO 3D in the US and more recently the HTC Sensation in the UK.

Following a series of tweets to the company’s official Twitter account over what, when, where, and why HTC tweeted out that:

“Due to Sense's hardware requirements, only our newest devices (Flyer, EVO 3D, Sensation) will be able to support it”

That left, as you can imagine, a lot of sad faces, especially those who’ve only just snapped up the company’s latest phones; the HTC Incredible S and the HTC Desire S.

Panic, and no doubt stacks of returns later, HTC issued a clarification tweet in an attempt to quell any possible bad taste that’s perhaps started to grow.

“Clarification: aspects of the latest HTC Sense won’t work on some previous devices. We are working to incorporate other aspects that will.”

It means that where possible, and we would presume it’s features like the new lock screen rather than the 3D graphically tiles in a Zoetrope style spinning wheel, some features will be coming to some of the older phones.

But before you HTC Hero owners crack out the champagne in anticipation we would gander a guess that the range of current HTC smartphones to get the features will be small.

Think Android 2.3 handsets or above like the Desire S, but probably not the Incredible S.
