Palm announces new Treo for Europe

Will be available on Vodafone 3G network

Palm has announced that it will market a version of its latest Treo smartphone in Europe through Vodafone.

Although previous versions of the phone have been available via the Orange network in the UK, the company has opted to move to Vodafone for this new 3G model.

The new handset will be available first to Vodafone customers in multiple European countries, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands, before the end of the calendar year.

Palm last month forecast weaker-than-expected results for the current quarter after it stopped selling its Treo 650 model in Europe because of technical problems in Europe.

Only an estimated 2% of business email inboxes world-wide are accessed via mobile, according to market research firm The Radicati Group.

Palm is hoping that by using Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5 operating system and Vodafone's 3G network it will be able to take on the Blackberry and other smartphone devices head-on.
