4 April 2011 18:03 GMT / By Rik Henderson

A raid on an Apple Store in Chula Vista, California has ended with the death of one of the suspects. The intruder was believed to have been shot in the head by a security guard.

The attempted break-in happened at Apple's Otay Ranch store, with Chula Vista police confirming that three people smashed the windows of the branch early on Monday morning (4 April), before being discovered by the armed guard.

One was found mortally injured in his car parked in the mall parking lot a short distance away, while the other two, a man and a woman who live nearby, have now been apprehended. It is believed that one of those currently in police custody was also shot.

Local schools were locked down as a precaution, but have since been reopened, while the relevant part of the mall is still closed pending investigation.
