Canon lightning quick to state Thunderbolt ambitions

Canon has jumped on board the Thunderbolt revolution, stating that it will be supporting the new Intel I/O technology standard.

Hiroo Edakubo, group executive of Canon’s Video Products Group said: "We are excited about Thunderbolt technology and feel it will bring new levels of performance and simplicity to the video creation market."

Thunderbolt was developed by Intel, in collaboration with Apple, under the code name Light Peak and the latest generation MacBook Pro machines all feature the super-fast transfer option.

Thunderbolt offers a two-way transfer of data between your computer and other electronic devices. Using high-speed optical cable technology, Thunderbolt delivers a high bandwidth of 10Gbps (on a cable up to 100m in length), meaning that it has the ability to transfer a full-length Blu-ray movie in less than 30 seconds.

That's more than 20 times faster than USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than FireWire 800 - and with HD video shooting becoming the norm on even entry-level compacts, you can see why Canon wants in on the Thunderbolt fun.

Expect to see more manufacturers pledging their support for the new tech soon.
