Sophos security firm highlights the operating system's impermeability

Security firm Sophos is recommending that people worried about malware switch to Apple Macs, as its research into the last 6 months of cybercrime shows that the Mac OS has the fewest problems.

The irony is that part of the reason Macs are targeted less frequently is because fewer people use them.

Sophos said, "It seems likely that Macintosh will continue to be a safer place for computer users to be for some time to come".

The report also said that Trojans outnumber viruses and worms 4:1, compared to 2:1 in the first half of 2005.

The biggest attack came from the Sober-Z that spread like wildfire, at one point accounting for every 1 in 13 e-mails sent.

All of the top ten malware in the first 6 months of 2006 affected Windows only, not Mac OS.
