You know that feeling you get when you're about to see something harrowing or disturbing and just can't tear your eyes away - like Justin Bieber's acceptance of his Brit award, or The One Show any night of the week? Well, the official announcement trailer for Dead Island is one of those things; an experience that will leave an indelible mark on your very soul.

Beautifully made and utterly compelling, it leaves you in no doubt that the final game, coming for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year, will be no mere zombie romp. Could we finally have a valid rival to Capcom's Resident Evil series? Or, better still, a cross between a George A. Romero classic and Dead Space? We certainly hope so.

Please be aware though that if you get upset by imagery of small children coming to harm, gore or Hawaiian shirts, don't bother with the trailer, it'll only ruin your day.

Incidentally, the trailer itself has prompted several Hollywood bigwigs to contact publisher Koch Media (owner of label Deep Silver) with a view to option the license for a big screen movie. Speaking to the LA Times Blog, Malte Wagener, the company's head of global business development, said, "We've had a lot of inquiries, not only from Union but from other major players for film adaptation. The talks are very early and there's no deal whatsoever. Right now I'd say it boils down to three or four opportunities. Some are studios, not just bonders [financiers] like Union. We'd rather go with a big studio that can bring the creative side."

He also revealed that directors have approached Koch too: "We had a couple of big-name directors come to us. One of the top directors in Hollywood sent a studio his link to the trailer and said he was interested in this, and the studio contacted us. There are different opinions of course in how to do this. The first is that you find a producer and then he brings in a creative team. The other is to find a director first and he'll bring people along. My feeling is we should find a director first."

However, it may be a while before anything concrete happens: "If someone is waving a couple million dollars at us it's an intriguing thing, but I think if we just took the next offer we'd lose value in the long term," said Wagener.

"We're a private company and we're not under the same pressure as other companies. We don't have people saying accept the next offer. But we're also aware the buzz won't last forever."

What do you think? OTT or just enough to make you clamour for the game? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below...
