WEBSITE OF THE DAY - The People’s Supermarket

It's shopping, but not as we know it

If you’ve been watching the Channel 4 series following this brave exploit, it’ll need no introduction. If you haven’t, then firstly it’s worth catching on 4OD, and secondly here’s the deal:

Top chef Arthur Potts Dawson decided to take on the big supermarkets at their own game, but not for the gargantuan profits at stake, but to make supermarket shopping better for everybody.

In the UK, certain industries are practically dead. Take dairy farming. Thanks to the supermarkets and their continual quest for lower prices, it’s pretty much gone in its traditional form, with plans for US-style "megadairies" to take the place of cows happily wandering through pastures and grazing on lush, green grass.

There’s also the unbelievable amount of food wasted every year, much of it by the big supermarkets. Potts Dawson thinks this is criminal, so set up the People’s Supermarket to see if things could be done differently.

It’s a fascinating experiment, not just in retail, but also in society’s appetites and expectations in general.

Follow its progress or get involved at thepeoplessupermarket.org.

We wish them all the best.
