Like your iPad? Like the BBC iPlayer? Well, according to Geoff Marshall, a loose-lipped BBC Interactive operations manager, you’ll be able to enjoy both from Thursday. The Beeb is launching a dedicated iPlayer App for iPad this week.
“iPlayer App for iPad is being released this Thursday - 10th Feb. 3G connection is browse only. Browse+Playback requires Wi-Fi. #iplayer,” reads the tweet, spilling the beans after Marshall left a meeting where it just happened to be mentioned.
Of course, it's worth pointing out that you can already get the iPlayer on the iPad, just not in app form - now soon to be rectified.
In follow up tweets Marshall also confirms that the app will be strictly for the UK and only for the iPad. There'll be no iPhone version. However, he does go on to say that he isn't the developer for the app, "merely a beeb operational techie, and not an App developer!"
As for local downloads, he is unsure, but with Apple still not allowing file access we suspect this is unlikely.
Anything else?
Of course, Marshall also details Inter-linking - the feature that links to non-BBC programmes to go live on the 8 February - presumably for the browser version of the iPlayer.
“... Interlinking (the feature that links to non-BBC programmes) should go live on iPlayer tomorrow (8th Feb).#iplayer," he said.
All eyes on the App store for the download then.
UPDATE: Head of Communications for the BBC's Future Media & Technology Division has confirmed that the apps are coming.
Thanks Tom
