Canon IXUS range adds trio of new models

Canon is going launch crazy at the moment, and it isn't just DSLR models flying out; three new IXUS compacts have also gone live and official - the IXUS 310HS, the IXUS 220HS and the IXUS 115HS - with, as the name suggests, the new range all packing Canon's HS system.

Starting with the daddy of the pack, the 310HS, this is a 12.1-megapixel camera (with DIGIC 4 image processing) that is also capable of shooting 1080p Full HD video with stereo sound.

It has a 24mm, ultra-wide angle, 4.4x optical zoom lens with a bright f/2.0 maximum aperture and it has a 4-stop optical image stabiliser that steadies the light passing through the lens elements.

On the back is a 3.2-inch 460K dot-resolution PureColor II touchscreen LCD, which allows for touch auto-focus and has a wide angle viewing area.

Down from the 310HS is the 220HS, which offers the same 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and also packs a 24mm ultra-wide angle 5x optical zoom, and 1080p HD shooting into a chassis just 19.5mm thin - with Canon declaring it is the skinniest of its kind.

It doesn't have the touchscreen capabilities of its bigger brother, but does boast a 2.7-inch PureColor II G LCD screen (230k dot).

You can also get some underwater action going on with the 220HS with the WP-DC320L waterproof casing for up to 3m or the WP-DC41 for up to 40m.

Last up is the budget option, Canon IXUS 115HS, which still packs a 12.1-megapixel sensor, can still shoot 1080p video and still has the option of waterproof casing.

It has a 28mm wide-angle, 4x optical zoom Canon lens with optical image stabilizer and round the back packs a 3-inch PureColor II G LCD.

Pricing for the new IXUS range is as follows - the 310D will set you back £299, the 220D £199 (and £55 or £225 extra for the waterproof casings) and the 115HS £179. The 310HS is out in March, the other two a month earlier.
