The Social Network is in line to scoop a number of Academy Awards after being nominated for a total of eight Oscars.

David Fincher's adaptation of Ben Mezrich's 2009 book - The Accidental Billionaires (with the screenplay by Aaron Sorkin) - picked up four awards at the 2011 Golden Globes, including the biggie - the best motion picture award.

For the Oscars it has been nominated as Best Picture (and is the odds-on favourite) and there are also nominations for Jesse Eisenberg for Best Actor, David Fincher for Best Director and Aaron Sorkin for his adapted screenplay. It's also up for Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Original Score.

At the Golden Globes Fincher took the prize for his directing, Sorkin for his screenplay and there was also an award for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the best score.

The film was released in October 2010 and grossed almost $200 million at the box office (on a budget of $40 million).

The 83rd Academy Awards takes place on 27 February.
