Nvidia Tegra 3 bringing in quad-core action at MWC?

Next gen-chip could be announced at Barcelona expo

21 January 2011 13:02 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

Not content with stealing the show with its Tegra 2 devices at CES 2011 at the beginning of the year, it seems that Nvidia may have another massive trade show scalp in mind.

Because, and treat this story with the smidgen of respect that mere rumour and speculation deserve, there are numerous reports suggesting that the Santa Clara based chip specialist will use Mobile World Congress 2011 to announce to the world its next-gen platform - Tegra 3.

The reports are based on a quote from an Nvidia top dog. Tegra general manager Mike Rayfield told Hexus:

"I'm going to come pretty close to my cadence of a launch every year. It will be in production around the same time as my competitors' first dual-cores will."

The Tegra 2 was launched in January 2010 - so you do the math(s).

There's no confirmed specs obviously but the rumour mill is throwing up some juicy details regarding perhaps a quad-core Cortex A9 device, with either a GeForce 8 or 9 series GPU with CUDA technology on board too.

Quad-core tablets for IFA 2011 (or more likely CES 2012) then? Yes please.
