Nokia no longer Comes With Music

All you can eat music deal scrapped

Nokia is scrapping its Comes With Music (or Ovi Music Unlimited) offering in 27 of the 33 markets that it operates in, including the UK.

The Ovi Music Store will continue to operate, but the music on tap offering that was sold with some handsets (including the Nokia 5800) will no longer be available. Anyone with a current agreement will still get the full year of their term, but there will not be an option to renew when it finishes.

Nokia will continue to offer unlimited music with 12-month subscriptions in China, India and Indonesia and with 6-month subscriptions in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

In its other 27 markets though, Nokia has admitted defeat, stating that: "The markets clearly want a DRM-free music service".

The DRM issue was always going to be problematic for the service, as users could only listen to their songs via their Nokia handsets. And whilst it was a nice little extra to bundle with several mid-range devices, it's obviously proved non-viable for the Finnish company.
