Qualcomm to take on Nvidia with dual-core chips

Nvidia may have stolen the show over in Las Vegas at CES with its Tegra 2 powered mobile devices, but if the chip maker thought it was going to have a dual-core stranglehold over the market for 2011 then it's in for a shock.

Qualcomm, who has been talking up its dual-core efforts for some time now, has confirmed that we'll be seeing the dual-core Snapdragon chips in devices in 2011 - although no exact date has been set.

The advantage that Qualcomm has over its rivals is that it can not only provide the processor, but also tie it up in a nice little package with a GPU and connectivity modules such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

“We have what we think is a very innovative product”, said Cristiano Amon, senior vice president of Qualcomm’s Cellular Products Group.

Amon also said that Android tablets from the likes of Acer, Compal and Pantech will ship with the dual core Snapdragon chips in 2011, along with some, as yet, unannounced smartphones.

The Asus Eee Pad MeMO is going to be rocking a dual-core Qualcomm chip when it launches later this year too.
