Verizon iPhone officially announced....finally

Verizon has revealed what was possibly the worst kept secret in the tech industry - that the iPhone has finally landed on its network.

Speaking at a press event in New York, Verizon CEO Lowell Macadam said: "If the press write something long enough, eventually it comes true".

And indeed it has as the long-awaited, and much-debated, iPhone 4 Verizon CDMA network version will be hitting US shops "early next month" for new and existing Verizon customers.

The US carrier spent CES talking up its LTE plans, and it was suggested in some rumour circles that its iPhone 4 launch would be a 4G version. But those rumours have proved false.

Analysts are predicting that Verizon will sell up to 6 million iPhone devices on its network during 2011 with the majority of these coming by way of existing customers upgrading to the Apple handset, rather than people jumping ship from AT&T.

The Verizon iPhone 4 will sell for $199 for the 16GB version and $299 for the 32GB one, on contract, and mobile hotspots are included for up to five devices.

Existing customers will have an opportunity to pre-order on 3 February with a general sale open a week later.
