George the Robot: Born in the 1950s, walks again in 2010

Looking like something from a 1950s pulp science fiction novel or movie, George the Robot has been woken from his 50-year slumber with just a spot of oil and some new batteries.

His inventor, Brit Tony Sale, and ex-RAF pilot and spy catcher, was inspired to dust off the 6ft automaton when BBC show Wallace and Gromit's World of Invention dug out Pathé News footage of George recorded on 18 December 1950, and ran it as part of its broadcast.

Thankfully, George was largely unscathed, and all it took to get him up and running again were a couple of motorcycle batteries and a dash of WD-40. And considering that he was made from re-purposed aluminium from a crashed Wellington bomber and £20 worth of parts, he's a grand example of fine British engineering.

Tony Sale has now donated George to Bletchley Park’s National Museum of Computing in the UK, where you can go to view him from 1pm on Thursdays, Saturdays and most Bank Holidays.

Now all we want to know is, where's Metal Mickey?
