Sony to take on Amazon and Apple with ebook effort

Sony Reader iPhone and Android apps arriving in December

23 November 2010 14:36 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

Sony has revealed that it is planning on going cross-platform with its ebook reading platform, Sony Reader, by releasing an app for iOS and Android devices.

There's no plans for a big screen iPad version yet, but the iPhone and Android apps will give access to the Sony Reader Store, without the need of forking out for the Sony hardware.

Like the Kindle app, you'll be able to sync up with your ebook reader hardware (should you own one), as well as your PC, and there will be all the usual ereader gubbins such as bookmarks, highlights, and adjustable font sizes.

There's nothing new or revolutionary here, but it does give readers a new option in the ebook marketplace.
