Apple has implemented a new feature for developers in the iOS 4.2 update on Monday, that allows the browser to take advantage of the accelerometer found in the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The news means that developers could programme in movement actions on to a web page, allowing mobile users to shake to go to the next page, for example.

“Safari now supports the DeviceOrientation API (W3C draft). Looking at the available objects, it seems that all the API is fully supported (including ondeviceorientation and ondevicemotion events); however on my tests up to now, I could only get accelerometer data with success”, writes developer Maximiliano Firtman on his blog.

Firtman has created a video showing a ball moving around the screen in the Safari browser to show what is possible, with instructions on how to implement the new feature for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users.

The developer says that Apple has also introduced other features into the mix including better print support and more HTML5 elements.

Expect your mobile web experience to get considerably more animated in the future.
