Google gives free Wi-Fi in the sky for Christmas

The Google Chrome browser team has announced that free Wi-Fi will be available in the clouds (the real ones, not the metaphoric one where all of our data is stored) as a result of a deal with three US airlines.

Anyone travelling on American domestic flights between 20 November and 2 January on Virgin America, AirTran or Delta will have access to a Wi-Fi network on board their flight. That's a total of 700 planes and around 15 million passengers.

“We are constantly working to help provide a better web experience to users around the world”, said Sundar Pichai, VP of product management at Google. “Whether it be building a better browser with Chrome or bringing free Wi-Fi to air travellers this holiday season, we are constantly innovating to ensure users’ access to the web is fast, simple and seamless”.

Google offered a similar deal (Virgin only) last year.
