Nokia design competition showcases mobiles of the future

Concept handsets tried to integrate the experiences of the five senses

Your next mobile phone is likely to look nothing like its current form if Nokia has anything to do with it.

The company has just released the results of its Future of Mobile Design competition in collaboration with Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

Twenty-five Industrial Design MA students from the College worked to a brief set by Nokia to create concept handsets that would look current up to 2015, and combined elements of the five senses.

Nokia created a dummy of the winning design, which was submitted by Daniel Meyer. The mobile was inspired by the advent of video calling and the practice of carrying around pictures of friends and family.

It acts as a picture frame wherever the user is, showcasing an image on the outside of the case.

Daniel Meyer said, "The brief was a great challenge, especially because we had to consider social trends and technological changes".

Meyer receives a cash prize and a summer placement in Nokia's design team.

The Future of Mobile Design exhibition runs from 13th to 16th June at the Air Gallery, Dover Street, London W1S.
