Star Wars saga to get 3D cinema outing

Lucasfilm has officially announced that the classic Star Wars series is all set for a 3D cinema release in 2012.

Apparently George Lucas is now convinced that cinema's 3D technology can do his films justice and has begun work on the first film in the narrative timeline: Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

"Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right", said John Knoll, visual effects supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic.

"It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results.

"For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience".

The bad news is that the plan seems to be to release the films one by one, year after year - so basically you're gonna have to wait until 2015 before you see a decent Star Wars film in 3D.

There are also reports that Lucas is planning to release all six films on Blu-ray next year, complete with "upgraded picture and sound quality" as well as a host of brand new deleted scenes and bonus features.
