Samsung has admitted that its Galaxy Tab has problems running some Android Marketplace apps. While the company has previously claimed that all applications will run correctly on the forthcoming tablet, it has now backtracked when faced with evidence to the contrary.
The problem lies with some Android Marketplace applications being limited to an 800 x 400 resolution, whereas the Galaxy Tab's TFT LCD touchscreen is natively 1024 x 600. That means that the offending apps won't scale to fit the Samsung device's screen.
However, this is not an issue that is isolated to the Galaxy Tab. All tablets running Android 2.2 (Froyo) and below will be susceptible if they have a screen resolution of over 800 x 400.
Certainly, Google was already aware of the problem. As The Inquirer reports, Google's global product management director for mobiles, Hugo Barra told a media briefing at the company's London offices yesterday: "If you want Android market on that platform, the apps just wouldn't run, Froyo is not optimised for tablets."
Therefore it seems that each manufacturer will have to have its own exclusive, limited marketplace, carrying just the apps that are guaranteed to work. It'll limit the amount of compatible applications on offer, but at least the end users will be spared any trial and error testing themselves.
Could this be a hurdle in Samsung's (and other manufacturer's) attempts to rein in the iPad? Or does it not matter to you? Let us know in the comments below...
