Slingbox PRO-HD to stream high-def content

Sling Media has expanded its arsenal of media streamers with the addition of its first HD-capable product - the Slingbox PRO-HD.

The new device enables you to stream HD content from your home television, including DVBT digital TV signals, HDTV cable or satellite broadcasts and HD PVR recordings, to a laptop or desktop computer. But the big sell here is going to be for those that like to watch their TV content on portable devices such as the iPhone or Dell Streak. The company has developed clients for various mobile gadgets including the iPhone, as well as support for Android devices.

Sling Media's VP EMEA, Stuart Collingwood, told Pocket-lint that although the iPod client will work on an iPad, the manufacturer is currently working on a dedicated iPad app. He couldn't tell us exactly when this will be available, but we expect that the wait won't be too long.

The Slingbox PRO-HD is the first and, so far, the only Slingbox product that can stream HD pictures. While the Slingbox PRO and Slingbox SOLO scale HDTV sources to SD resolutions, the Slingbox PRO-HD preserves the original resolution and delivers it to a compatible computer or secondary TV when paired with a SlingCatcher.

The brand is also launching Slingbox.com, an online portal that lets you watch your chosen programme or film using any major internet browser without the need to download the SlingPlayer application, says Sling Media.

Slingbox PRO-HD supports both 4:3 and 16:9 widescreen pictures, including built-in Freeview, and is equipped with a variety of inputs and outputs including S-Video, composite video and component video.

With a suggested price tag of £249.99, the Sling Box PRO-HD will be available from Amazon, John Lewis and Best Buy.
