Photokina 2010: A mouse and calculator in one

Product convergence has been going on for some time in the gadget world, but as far as we're aware, this is the first time that anyone's tried to merge a computer mouse with a calculator.

The multi-tasking Canon X Mark I Mouse acts not only as a wireless laser mouse, but also as a personal calculator, complete with numberered buttons and a display.

The mouse can be user-locked to prevent accidental button-pressing during 'mouse' use, and comes with Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, three click buttons and a scroll-wheel.

It'll be out in November, priced at £39.99.

We tracked the little blighter down at Photokina to take a closer look.  For a brand new gadget, it doesn't look terribly modern and it felt light and plasticy. Is a mouse-calculator combo something that people really need, or even want? The adage, 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should' springs to mind.

Is a combined mouse and calculator a touch of genius or just plain daft? Let us know what you think in the comments box.
