Pentax has announced the newest addition to its DSLR lineup - the lightweight and compact Pentax K-r.

Despite having a biggish 23.6 x 15.8mm image sensor the K-r keeps its slim figure due to a stainless steel chassis that has been "downsized in-body shake reduction mechanism, and state-of-the-art, high-density packaging technologies that ensure space-efficient positioning and layout of the camera components".

The camera has 12.4 effective megapixels and has Pentax's Prime II engine on board for accurate, fast data processing.

It can take 6 pics in a second with a maximum of 25 in a single burst. It has a wide-frame autofocus system with 11 sensor points and there's also a spot beam feature for low light situations.

Movies can be shot in 720p HD at 25fps and, around the back, you'll find a 921k dots, 3-inch LCD for watching your movies back, or viewing your photos.

The Pentax K-r is due out in October and will sell for around £600 with a 18-55mm DAL and £100 more if you want an extra 50-200mm one.

As well as the new camera, Pentax also announced that it will be launching the DA 35, interchangeable fixed focal length standard lens, at the same time.

The lens, which will fit all of Pentax's DSLRs is a 53.5mm lens in the 35mm format and has a max aperture of f2.4. It will sell for around £180.
