What is the Google Doodle?

We at Pocket-lint love a good Google Doodle.

And whilst the latest effort (on show now) is lovely and colourful, and interactive - we're not entirely sure what it is for.

Usually Google rolls out its doodles to mark a significant anniversary or event, but the current design doesn't seem to have any relation to anything that has happened on 7 September.

The doodle is a collection of coloured balls that disperse and expand when you move your pointer around, and then settle to the Google logo when everything is still.

It seems as if the animation has been created using HTML5, so maybe Google has some big web announcement lined up for its 8 September event in San Francisco and the doodle holds a clue?
