Five plays Hokey Cokey with Project Canvas

Channel Five is back on board the good ship Project Canvas following its £104 million takeover by Richard Desmond's Northern & Shell Group.

The broadcaster had pulled out of the project back in July because of problems with the "fundamental strategic rationale" behind the venture.

But now the channel, which is set to be re-branded to its original Channel 5 status rather than Five under Desmond, is back in the game.

Desmond said: "Project Canvas is set to shape the future of broadcasting and open up new and exciting possibilities for viewers.

"This is important to the future of Channel 5 and having an open internet-connected TV platform fits closely with our plans to bring brilliant new content and interactive services to viewers.

We're delighted to renew Channel 5's commitment to supporting Project Canvas following a review of our digital strategy".

The reversal will come as welcome relief for the project which has endured a turbulent month after Virgin Media lodged an official complaint about the venture to Ofcom.
