Canon has launched a bevy of models on Thursday, ahead of the Photokina camera trade show in Germany in September, but it left out one model that the rumour mill was expecting - the Canon Powershot G12, or did it?

Cnet Asia, who hasn't been afraid to hit the publish button ahead of schedule before, was for a brief time detailing information about the company's next successor to the PowerShot G range: the PowersShot G12 as it is was "named" on Thursday morning.

The story, which has now been re-written to remove the G12 references (although incidentally the PowerShot G12 tag still remains), detailed the camera as featuring a 10-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, 2.8-inch tilt and swivel screen, manual exposure control, HD video (720p) video recording and optical image stabilization skills.

A quick phone call to Canon in the UK and our spokesman was playing "dumb" as to the leak, saying that Canon had launched the Ixus 1000 HS, the PowerShot S95 and the PowerShot SX130 IS in the UK on Thursday and nothing else.

So did Canon plan to launch the G12 on Thursday but change its mind, or is it waiting for a separate date to announce the camera nearer Photokina and away from big launches from Fujifilm, Olympus, and Nikon this week?

Judging by the official looking press shot in the Cnet story and the way the story was written, it looks like we shouldn't have too long to wait to hear about the new camera, officially, from the horse's mouth.
