Canon PowerShot S95 adds HD video to the mix

We still love that control ring

Canon PowerShot S95 adds HD video to the mix

The Canon PowerShot S90 was one of Pocket-lint's favourite cameras of 2009 - that front ring just put so much control into your hands, it proved to be a great compact for those familiar with DSLR controls.

We criticised the lack of HD video capture on that model - as many did - and Canon has righted wrongs with the Canon PowerShot S95.

The new high-end compact still sits beneath the PowerShot G11 at the top of the line, but packs in a selection of technologies to make it a formidable rival to the likes of Panasonic's new Lumix LX5.

You still get the versatile front control ring around that F/2.0 3.8x optical zoom lens, but you now get Canon's HS technology (high sensitivity) which we saw on the IXUS 300 HS.

This promises enhanced low light shooting, a high-sensitivity 10-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 processor and full resolution shooting up to ISO 3200, with ISO 12800 available for 2.5-megapixel shots.

This is paired with Hybrid Image Stabilisation and Canon is also offering up its High Dynamic Range shooting mode which captures multiple images and combines them to try and get the most out of a scene.

On the movie front you now get HD of the 720p variety, captured at a cinematic 24fps with stereo sound. There is now an HDMI port included in the camera for connection direct to your TV.

Canon also highlights the inclusion of "miniature effect" which seems to have crept into all manner of cameras of late, but we saw it to be highly effective on the Canon PowerShot SX210 IS.

You get plenty of shooting controls with manual, aperture and shutter priority shooting, with the option of JPEG and RAW capture, or you can simply rely on Smart Auto.

Other details evade us at the moment, as do official images (so we've used a pic of the S90 with this story), but we do have the price: £399, available from August 2010.
