Microsoft's revamp of its Xbox 360 console, the Xbox 360 S, has been a smash hit, according to new sales figures released in the US.

It turns out that making the device thinner, quieter and adding wireless is what gamers wanted all along, as they've headed to stores across the US to show their love and pick up the new console.

The NPD Group, a market research firm similar to GFK in the UK, is reporting that Microsoft sold 443,000 units in July, over double what it sold in July 2009.

Put that up against the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii and it smashes both. Their totals were 254,000 for the Wii and 215,000 for the PlayStation 3 according to TechFlash who've got a hold of the report details.

"It's the first time that the Microsoft has outsold all other hardware since September 2007, when Halo 3 was launched, says NPD analyst Anita Frazier," in an email accompanying the data to the tech site.

With Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 landing in the coming months, it looks like it's going to be a big, and good, year for the games console maker.
