HD-DVDs likely to be regionally encoded

Major players approve a move to regionally-encode the discs

It looks as though the HD-DVDs of the future won't free consumers from the shackles of regionally-encoded discs.

At the recent Steering Committee meeting of the DVD Forum, members approved a motion to develop Regional Playback Control (RPC) on HD-DVD-Video.

Current HD-DVD players obviously do not have any sort of RPC on them, but that looks set to change.

All the big players of the HD world are members of the DVD Forum, including IBM, Microsoft, Sony, and Toshiba.

It's not known how long it will take for RPC to be formally adopted and implemented for HD-DVDs.
